What is a Makerspace?

We’ll be the first to admit that we are not education or learning gurus and that we’re often googling jargon to ensure we’re keeping up with our friends in the teaching profession. So, if you’re unfamiliar with the ‘makerspace’ craze that has swept the education world the past few years then you’re not alone. We have long been fans of makerspaces and hope it’s a craze that lasts awhile. So, what exactly is a makerspace?

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative launched a passionate refocus on hands-on learning and all things science in, and outside, of the classroom. Makerspaces are rising in popularity in schools, community centers, libraries and homes across the world.

We love how Diana from Renovated Learning defines a school makerspace: “A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials.” She elaborates, “A makerspace can be anything from a repurposed book cart filled with arts and crafts supplies to a table in a corner set out with LEGOs to a full blown fab lab with 3D printers, laser cutters, and hand tools.  No two school makerspaces are exactly alike, nor should they be.” We love this! There is so much room for creativity in setting up your own makerspace.

We are passionate about helping schools, and families, create their own makerspaces utilizing our LEGO peel-and-stick baseplates. We’ve assisted several schools with building their own LEGO walls, LEGO work stations and LEGO tables. We will have more information coming out soon about how you can partner with us if your school is interested in a LEGO wall!

Have you made a makerspace in your school or home? How do your kids utilize it? Send us pictures! We are always seeking ideas of ways that our products are utilized by the greater Creative QT family!
