5 Festive Family Books for the Holidays
Reading with your kids has so many benefits beyond the obvious educational values. The Hinkles love gathering their five kids and all settling down to a festive tale before bed over the holiday season. Here are Creative QT's Favorite 5 Festive Family Reads.
1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
One of Dr Seuss' classic stories, telling how even the coldest of hearts can still warm to love Christmas. A fun book with a valuable moral behind it. Through comical rhymes readers are reminded about the true meaning of Christmas, and warned not to be fooled by the lure of greed and gifts.
2. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
This is an all-time favorite in the Hinkle household, with all five kids mesmerized by the magical tale of a train journey to meet Santa. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is so captivating of a child's dreams.
3. The Jolly Christmas Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg
This interactive book features many classic storybook characters. The Jolly Postman does his rounds to deliver the mail to favorite friends such as the Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood and the Gingerbread Man. Each piece of mail is enclosed in an envelope for the readers to open and explore. It might be a card, a small puzzle or a pamphlet, the excitement of opening the mail never gets old in this book!
4. Dream Snow by Eric Carle
The dreamy illustrations in this adorable board book make it perfect for the younger members of the family. There are some nice interactive sensory additions to this book, with there being a fun musical surprise at the end of the story.
5. Stick Man by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
The strong sense of family makes the tale of Stick Man such a winner with us. Stick Man becomes separated from his family in the run up to Christmas. After many adventures, Stick Man has a chance meeting with Santa, who reunites the lonely stick with his family just in time for the festivities.
There are so many magical stories to help celebrate the holiday season. Reading books as a family is the perfect way to stay screen free and foster imaginative and creative kids. Merry reading!
