Shiver me timbers, STEAM kits are all the rage at the moment. We thought we'd join in the fun, and create a novel way for families to Make Time Together whilst enjoying some play based learning.
Here is what we used, but remember that STEAM kits can be a collection of whatever you have lying around the house.
- our Mini Maker Space (made using four Peel 'n Stick Baseplates and an IKEA MALA easel)
- selection of LEGO blocks
- STEAM kit box containing: wooden treasure chest, acrylic paints, gold coins, plastic telescopes, LEGO pieces with hooks on, gold string, tape, children's scissors, fabric squares, eyepatches and cardboard rolls
- Task instructions (we used tea-stained paper to increase authenticity)
Think carefully about where you set up your STEAM challenge. Be sure to allow enough space for collaboration, as well as choosing somewhere that it doesn't matter if it gets messy. Due to the nature of our treasure map task, we set our STEAM kit up outside.
How it Works:
The first task is to get that lovely treasure chest painted. This needs to be done a good few hours in advance. Why not make this part of the family time together and each do part of the chest with a different color?
Choose a few members of your crew to be in charge of hiding the booty and making the treasure map on the Mini Maker Space. The idea is that there are no 'rules' or guidelines. Simply let the pirates use their imagination to build a map out of any of the materials provided. Of course there are also some fun props to help them get into character.
Here are some snap shots of our little pirate and Daddy pirate collaborating to hide the booty from Mommy pirate.
I hope the pictures indicate just how much fun this activity was. STEAM kits and maker spaces can't help but bring out your creative side. Working outdoors and as a team brings a whole host of benefits to the family. Here at Creative QT we encourage you to have a go at making a STEAM kit for all of the family to try. We promise, it will so be worth the effort!
