3 Simple Numeracy Activities Using The StoryBricks Letter Board
Making learning hands-on and fun can make all the difference when it comes to kids' engagement levels. That's why we are so excited to share with you 3 simple but effective numeracy activities using our newest product - the StoryBricks Letter Board.
1. Number Lines
This is a great one for younger learners! Simply arrange the StoryBricks numbers into a number line but leave one number out, instead put in a '?' brick.
Watch as your little learner counts along the number line to figure out which number is missing. They can then work on their number recognition skills to find the correct number brick and add it to the line in place of the '?' brick.
As well as this activity being great for numeracy skills, it is of course also giving your child an awesome fine motor skill workout. You can even equip them with one of the removal tools so that they can repeat the activity over an over again, making their own number lines.
2. Number Words
This is a sneaky one because it encourages both numeracy and literacy development! As kids finish up Pre-school and enter into Kindergarten, they spend a lot of time developing their recognition of numbers. This includes both in the numerical form, and in the word form.
This set up using your number bricks is a great invitation for kids to practice their numerical recognition skills, as well as their ability to spell the number words.
A great way to ensure this activity is suitable for your child is to engage in the activity with them. Offer support with sounding out the letters, and help them to feel confident in their learning. If you are working with a younger child you can always spell out the words for them and ask if they can add the correct number brick next to it.
3. One Less, One More
Number sequencing is another great skill for kids to develop. This set up is so quick to pull together, and it adds such a fun hands-on approach to working on number orders.
You can introduce the concept of starting with a number in the middle of the board. The child has to then work out which number brick they need to stick down in the one less and one more columns.
To vary the difficulty of this set up, simply alter the numbers in the middle. Make them single digit to keep things simpler, or go for multiple digits to challenge more able Mathematicians! Once your child completes the number sequences, encourage them to set up a new column of middle numbers for Mom or Dad to complete. Kids get such a kick out of watching their parents join in with the play and learning!
We hope you can see what an awesome numeracy learning tool the StoryBricks and Letter Board are! And we guarantee that if you leave out the materials, your kids will naturally come up with some numeracy activities and games of their own!
