3 Simple Literacy Activities Using The StoryBricks Letter Board

3 Simple Literacy Activities Using The StoryBricks Letter Board

Whether you have an avid literacy learner, or a reluctant reader, the StoryBricks Letter Board is here to help. Here are three simple but engaging literacy activities which your kids will love.

1. Letter Formation

Let's start with the basics. Learning letters and phonics is where it all begins, but we want to make that a fun experience for kids. In this inviting set up we challenged our kids to create letters out of LEGOs which match the StoryBricks letters.

They had to randomly draw a StoryBrick from the bag and then build it. Great for letter recognition, fine motor skills, engineering skills, and of course letter formation.

Some letters were definitely more challenging than others. This is a great way to differentiate the learning. Carefully select the letters in the bag to suit the ability of the child. You want to make sure they are building confidence and having fun, while also being challenged.

2. Sight Word Spell

Being familiar with sight words is a huge part of being a successful reader. This activity using the StroyBricks Letter Board and some cut out sight words takes literally minutes to set up but is way more fun than a pencil and paper!

Simply flip a sight word card and spell it out using the StoryBricks. This is working those letter recognition skills hard, as well as encouraging your child to sound out the word. With the StoryBricks being uppercase and the sight words used her being lowercase, this added an extra element of literacy.

To vary the challenge you can hand pick the difficulty of the sight words. You could also include some blank sight word cards and ask your child to write some of their own for you to complete. Parents joining in with the play and learning is always so much fun!

3. Fill in the Blank

This can be as simple or as complex as you like. Add a sentence starter and watch as your child gets to work!

You can simply prompt personal information such as name and age, or you can get them to think deeper asking them about favorite foods or activities.

Did you know that StoryBricks even include punctuation? You could ask your child to also add in the punctuation once they've filled in the blank!
